Importance of Nutmeg | Shreshtha Ayurveda

Nutmeg is the seed of the nutmeg tree or Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg is a tropical evergreen tree native to Indonesia and cultivated widely in India for its fruit. It is commonly used as a spice in the culinary world. But it is a very important and useful seed to store at home because of its multiple benefits.

Sanskrit name: Jatiphala


Common name: Nutmeg

Assamese: জাইফল jaiphol

According to Ayurveda, it balances the Vatha and Kapha dosha. It is a good digestive, and has properties of removing phlegm. It is also good for the skin.

Note: Nutmeg is always advised to be used in small quantities. Higher doses can cause side-effects.


Dosage:

Adults: 250-500 mg per day

Children: 75- 125 mg per day

Remember to break the hard and black outer shell and use only the seed.

What are the benefits of nutmeg?

  • To stop loose motions

For adults: Rub quarter of a nutmeg on stone to make a paste (can make powder or grate it too) Mix this paste/powder with honey and lick it one or two times a day. Can be mixed with buttermilk too.

For kids: Rub one eighth of a nutmeg on stone to make a paste (can make powder or grate it too) Mix this paste/powder with honey and make the child lick it one or two times a day. Can be mixed with buttermilk too.

  • Indigestion in kids:

For infants: Mix powder from ¼ of a nutmeg powder with ½ tsp of cumin seeds and ¼ tsp of ajwain powder. Divide this into 8 parts. Give it 2 times a day with mother’s milk or honey.

For age 1- 5 years: Divide into 4 parts and give twice a day with honey.

This also improves appetite and taste in the kids

  • Acne/ pimples:

To heal painful, large pus-filled acne: Make a paste of nutmeg and apply on the acne. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash with cold water.

As facepack: Mix 1 part of nutmeg powder with 2 parts of sandal powder and make a paste with carrot juice. Apply this a s face pack to reduce acne marks.

  • In productive cough: Mix 1 part of Nutmeg powder with 2 parts of Triphala powder and 3 parts of Yastimadhu (Licorice) and take it 3 times a day with honey.

  • To clear the throat and improve voice: Mix 1 part of nutmeg powder with 4 parts of Licorice and take with honey or boil them in 1 glass of water, reduce to half and gargle. Singers can do this regularly to improve and protect their voice.

  • Sleeplessness and Anxiety: Mix 1 part of nutmeg powder in 2 parts of Brahmi powder and 2 parts of Amla powder. Consume ½ tsp of this with milk/water at bedtime.

  • In Irritable bowel syndrome: Mix 1 part of nutmeg powder with 4 parts of Pomegranate peel powder or 200 ml of pomegranate juice and consume twice a day

  • In premature ejaculation: Mix 2 grams of nutmeg with 5-6 strands of Saffron (powdered) and consume with honey at bedtime.
